Architecting Better Choices & Team Dynamics
How small changes in context shape behaviour
Course Overview
People rarely act on information alone. What they do is shaped by the environment around the decision: which option is pre-selected, how many steps stand in the way, what catches their eye, when a reminder arrives, how a message is worded, and what they see colleagues doing. Small, deliberate changes to that context, sometimes called “choice architecture,” can produce large and lasting improvements in behaviour, often at little or no cost.
This online course introduces the practical science behind these effects and gives you a simple structure for applying it: the EAST framework (Easy, Attractive, Social, Timely). You will explore seven core levers: defaults, friction, simplification, salience, timing and prompts, framing, and social norms. You’ll see how each one works, when to use it, and where it can backfire.
The course is grounded in workplace situations. Applied examples show how these techniques can improve procedure compliance, increase on-time report submission, and strengthen everyday safety behaviours. You will also look at how team dynamics, such as visible peer behaviour, shared commitments, and group norms, can reinforce or undermine the outcomes you want.
By the end, you will be able to diagnose why a desired behaviour isn’t happening and design small, ethical, evidence-informed changes to make it more likely.
Who it’s for: Team leaders, supervisors, HSE and compliance staff, HR and L&D professionals, and anyone responsible for processes that depend on people doing the right thing consistently.
Format: Self-paced online learning with short explainer videos, real-world case examples, and a practical redesign exercise.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain how context and choice architecture influence behaviour, and why awareness or instruction alone often fails to change what people do.
- Describe the EAST framework (Easy, Attractive, Social, Timely) and use it as a structured lens for analysing behavioural problems.
- Identify the role of defaults, friction, simplification, salience, timing and prompts, framing, and social norms in everyday workplace decisions.
- Diagnose the barriers behind a specific behaviour gap, such as missed procedures, late reports, or unsafe shortcuts, by mapping where friction, confusion, or competing cues occur.
- Design targeted interventions that apply one or more EAST principles to make a desired behaviour easier, more appealing, more socially reinforced, or better timed.
- Apply social norms and team dynamics constructively, for example through peer visibility, positive norm messaging, and shared commitments, while avoiding messages that normalise poor behaviour.
- Evaluate whether an intervention is working, using simple measures and small tests before scaling.
- Recognise the ethical boundaries of choice architecture, ensuring interventions remain transparent, respect autonomy, and serve the interests of the people affected.
